CHAGIGAH '01 is the Midwest's annual Israeli folk dance camp weekend, bringing together dancers, teachers and leaders from around the region and the nation . We are thrilled to celebrate our 10th year! Chagigah has been recognized nationally and internationally as one of the very best of the Israeli folk dance camps. In fact, a review in one dance publication went so far as to say, if you can only get to one camp, make it Chagigah.
Fun, learning, sharing and a community spirit will highlight this extraordinary event. It will feature the special talents of our founding artist, Shmulik Gov-ari, and, returning to us after an incredible Chagigah '00, Mishael Barzilay, Dudu Barzilay and Avi Perez. All of these teachers continue to delight Israeli folk dance enthusiasts around the world. And, as we saw last year, there is something very special about spending a weekend with the Barzilay father-son team.
We wanted to do something truly unique to celebrate the 10th year of Chagigah. We concluded that the best possible way would be to have in camp, all of the faculty alumni who helped to build Chagigah. So, in addition to the Chagigah '01 faculty mentioned above, we are thrilled to welcome as our guests, Marco Ben Shimon, Gadi Bitton, Victor Gabbay, Edy Greenblatt, Talia Hirsch, and Israel Yakovee. They honor us by their presence. We honor them for their contribution to Chagigah as well as their contribution to Israeli Folk Dancing in general.
Our program will include dance parties, instruction, specialty sessions, singing, surprises and camaraderie in the special retreat setting of the Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute (OSRUI).
WHO SHOULD COME
CHAGIGAH '01 is designed for adults (college age and older) most of whom have at least one year of Israeli folk dance experience. Since this will be an intense weekend with lots of dancing, familiarity with the basics is generally assumed.
THE SPONSOR
CHAGIGAH '01 is sponsored by Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute , the first of the camps and conference centers operated by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the Reform Movement. The Institute includes as part of its mission the desire to "create and encourage an atmosphere rich in Jewish celebration...and expression, set in natural surroundings and intermingled with recreation and fun.
THE PROGRAM
We begin early with a Friday afternoon "Past Hits and Oldies" session presented by our guest teachers. This is an opportunity to learn some of the hits you may have missed and to dance some old favorites from the early years. This session concludes with an "oldies" open dance session. We continue with a specialty dance session.
Friday night includes Shabbat dinner and is highlighted by Kiddush, candle lighting and singing, with services available for all. The evening dance party follows.
On Saturday and Sunday we will have warm-ups and morning general teaching sessions. The afternoons feature specialty sessions presented by our guest/alumni faculty, as well as general teaching sessions plus review sessions.
Each night, following the evening dance party, we will offer our popular Night Owl sessions for those die-hards who want to "dance till you drop." Sunday evening will include our popular concluding banquet (with some special surprises in store). Monday morning, we will review the dances from the entire weekend.
We will provide a syllabus of the dances planned. CDs will be provided for all (included as part of your registration). T-shirts will be available only on a pre-order basis. Continuing with our wonderful innovation, the camp instructional video will be prepared in advance and distributed at camp only to those who pre-order.

ABOUT THE FACULTY
We are very excited and pleased to be able to present one of the most outstanding faculties in Israeli Folk Dancing. This year we have both some wonderful continuity and some exciting change in store for you. We believe our faculty represents some of the best of what Israeli folk dancing has to offer.
Shmulik Gov-ari returns to us as founding dance artist and inspiration for Chagigah. He is renowned in Israel and throughout the world for his work with recreational and performing groups. Truly one of the great talents, Shmulik has given us numerous wonderful dances like Lechu Neranena, Kol Nedarai, Tarbuka, Eilat, Ahuvati Bat 50, Lama Ma, Etz Hazayit, Barake and many more. And he is unique as a teacher. It is not an exaggeration to say that one really experiences a dance when learning it from him. We are thrilled to have Shmulik back with us and we acknowledge his extraordinary support for Chagigah.
Mishael Barzilay, from Tel Aviv, making his third appearance at Chagigah, requires little introduction to most of you. A master teacher for over 30 years, Mishael is one of the leading markidim (dance leaders) in Israel. He runs wonderful sessions and he also runs one of the key Hishtalmuyot (teachers' workshops) at which new dances get officially introduced. He hosts numerous special folk dance events and trips, both in Israel and abroad. Mishael has a fine eye for dances that will succeed. He has introduced a number of them around the world. We look forward to his bringing us the latest and greatest as well as the dances that really get done in Israel.
Avi Perez, choreographer and markid, from the Tel Aviv area, also returns to Chagigah for this third year. Avi has been a fixture on the Israeli Folk Dance scene both in Israel and throughout the world. He has contributed many popular dances to the repertoire, runs very successful sessions in Israel, and has participated in numerous camps. His dances invariably demonstrate his love of folk dancing and they quickly become part of sessions all over. Some of his dances include Rei'ach Vetzeva, Keivan She'ein Lada'at, Zman Layla, Hachayim Ha-acherim, Tov Shebatem, Eretz Esh Ve'eretz Yam, Shir Shel Yom Chulin, Shir Mikol Halev, Hakol Od Yistader and Senorita VeSenora. He is also a joy to watch, learn from and be with. We look forward with much anticipation to Avi's return to Chagigah.
Dudu Barzilay rounds out this incredible faculty as a successful young choreographer already with a world-wide reputation and following. He is a pleasure to have on the dance floor and has a wonderful spirit and manner. Dudu has already contributed a number of hits to the repertoire such as Debka Inbar, Inbal, Me'ahev, Yachad, Shoshanat Sfarad, Pamela and Ga'agu'a. A major leader in his own right, Dudu works with his father as part of a very successful team. Although Mishael and Dudu usually cover for each other when one is out of the country, they both felt that being part of Chagigah was worth breaking their rule again. It means a great deal to us that they have decided to be a part of Chagigah '01.
